Rattan Chair with what I like to call a "Manufacturer's Special"

Picture
This rattan chair has a caning panel that has traditional caning pattern and material, but the way it is installed in the back is definitely not something I see every day. The caned seat back unscrews from the chair and the cane is attached by partially wrapping the cane around the rattan and is fixed in place by a thousand and one staples. A smaller rattan strip covers the raw caning edges in the back.

Sheet Cane installed into a metal frame

This counter height chair is very reminiscent to Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin metal dining chairs from the 1970s. The cane is set directly into metal rather than wood. Regular wood glue cannot be used in installation and removal of the old cane and installation is much more difficult.

Heirloom Hanging Chair

For this project every scrap of the original cane wrapping was removed and replaced. This chair had been left outside in the elements and mildew ate away at the original caning. The cane wrapping is essential in the structural integrity of this hanging chair.

My clients had this chair re-done for their daughter's room. It originally belonged to a grandmother. These hanging chairs have become very popular and trendy again and original examples are very sought after.

Mid-Century Rocking Horses

These bent rattan rocking horses are so much fun to have restored for future generation's use. Re-wrapping joints and new seats are essential to structural stability as these are at a vintage that the old cane has become very brittle. Seats have a very unique wrapping technique and cannot be patched- full seat restoration is required.
